Do you want to save your relationship? Start by accepting the breakup

If you are wondering “How can I get my ex back? How can I save my relationship?” you have to start by accepting that it’s over, at least for now. It might not make sense at first glance, but it’s solid advice and there’s a good reason behind it.

Face the facts is the only way to start

A relationship requires two people. If one of you says “it’s over,” then it’s over. That doesn’t mean you can’t eventually start a new relationship with your ex, but the one you did have will end when either of you decides. As much as you want things to stay the way they were, refusing to accept the breakup is wrong for many reasons. Here are some:

– Show a complete lack of respect for your ex and their feelings. If you refuse to accept that your ex is done with you, you’re basically saying “I don’t care what you want. I don’t care if you’re happy or not! I want us to be together, so you HAVE to stay with me no matter how you feel!” about!” Would you like to be with a person who felt this way again? Neither does your ex.

– It puts you (and keeps you!) in the position of someone who has been abandoned. And that’s not only painful, it’s humiliating. Holding on to a relationship that the other person no longer wants is living a lie, but the only one you will deceive is yourself.

– It prevents you from moving on with your life. Refusing to accept the breakup tells your ex (and everyone else!) that you’re emotionally stuck in the past.

Which is more appealing: confident self-respect or needy desperation?

Accepting the breakup is the first step toward a new relationship, whether it’s with your ex or someone new. Either way, it will start with a mutual attraction, but how attractive can you be when you’re needy and desperate? The two personality traits that people find most attractive in a partner are confidence and self-respect, and that’s exactly what you’ll demonstrate by accepting the breakup.
