Vaginal odor can be an extremely unpleasant and annoying problem for a woman. Many times, the smell of the vagina can also cause embarrassment and humiliation for the woman who suffers from it, especially when friends and close people begin to detect and smell the odor.

Although it is quite normal for each and every healthy woman to have her own unique feminine scent, bad odors that develop in and around the vagina are usually the result of certain causes.

Causes of vaginal odor

Among the main key causes of a bad vaginal odor can be bacterial vaginosis, an infection caused by an overgrowth of bacteria called Gardnerella vaginalis in the vagina. Women suffering from bacterial vaginosis will also experience an increased amount of vaginal discharge that appears white, gray or yellowish in color, with an unpleasant fishy odor.

Other possible causes of vaginal odor can be due to poor hygiene, sweating, excessive washing, douching, and the use of scented body washes that can cause a vaginal infection.

How to treat and get rid of vaginal odor

Depending on the severity of the problem, vaginal odor can often be effectively controlled and eliminated. Some possible self-help remedies you can try include:

Eat a cup of plain yogurt every day or insert a yogurt-soaked tampon into your vagina for a few hours to treat odor. Some reports revealed that yogurt contains active “good” bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, which are effective in killing “bad” bacteria responsible for producing odour.

Watch what you eat. Avoid consuming sugary foods and drinks, such as beer or coffee, which can accumulate the amount of yeast in the vagina and cause a bad odor. Instead, drink more water and eat plenty of fruits (which contain antioxidant qualities) like apple, cranberry, and prunes, which are known to keep vaginal odor at bay.

Wear loose, comfortable cotton underwear to improve proper air circulation in the vaginal area if you suspect your genital odor may be caused by excessive sweating. Overly tight panties and tight pants can actually restrict airflow to your buttocks, vagina, and thighs, causing you to sweat more, which could make your condition worse.

Wash your vagina daily with warm water and unscented soap. Avoid using scented soaps or body washes and avoid douching to remove vaginal odour, as these can actually irritate and change the normal acidity of the vagina, making it more prone to vaginal bacterial infections.

To get rid of unpleasant feminine odor, mix a few drops of tea tree oil in some warm water and then use this mixture to wash your vagina. Tea tree oil contains natural antifungal properties that have been found helpful by some women in eliminating vaginal odor.
