Motorcycles for beginners: a review of the Honda Rebel

You have decided that you want to buy your first motorcycle and you want to have a quality bike that is easy to learn. The Honda Rebel CMX250 is a good choice on a beginner motorcycle. Honda has been building this bike, almost unchanged, for over 25 years. Although generally referred to as a 250cc motorcycle, it is actually an air-cooled 234cc parallel twin bike. This is the same motorcycle that is used nationwide in certified motorcycle training schools like the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and others, where you learn to ride hands-on. Everyone should seriously consider enrolling in one of these training courses as it can literally save your life. Even experienced cyclists can gain some knowledge from these courses. If you’ve never driven before, it’s the best way to quickly get up to speed with the proper knowledge to get you on the road safely. Also, most insurance companies usually offer you a discount if you have attended one of these schools.

The Honda Rebel is attractive, low to the ground, and easy to drive. The seat sits approximately 27 inches off the ground, making it an easy driver for even shorter people. If you are tall, you might feel a bit tight and maybe you should take a look at a Yamaha Vstar 250 that may be a better fit. Technically, this bike is classified as a cruiser. Cruisers were an American design that began with the first Indian and Harley Davidson motorcycles, and now comprise a large portion of all motorcycles sold.

The gear on this Honda is a typical 5 speed transmission, with a one down 4 up shift pattern. This bike is very forgiving for novice riders, so it’s a pleasure to learn about it. Light on its feet at just over 300 pounds, it’s literally easy to ride. A good-sized front disc brake and rear drum will give you plenty of stopping power. Due to its low seating position and low center of gravity, this bike is very easy to maneuver in any situation.

It’s comfortable, stylish, and comes with proven Honda durability and reliability. It will provide you around 70mpg on a regular basis and is capable of withstanding highway speeds, although due to its light weight I wouldn’t recommend it for excessive highway travel. It’s certainly a great city for commuting and great fun to learn and drive.
