RV Camping Tips: Setting Up and Breaking Down Your Campground

Are you a seasoned RV camping expert or just getting started? No matter what your level of RV camping experience is, setting up your RV camping is easy if you adhere to a few simple guidelines! Rule number one in a fluid setup is to keep it the same every time you go! Check out the checklist below or create one to suit your needs … after all, the idea is to get your RV camp up and running and put the lawn chairs next to the grill as quickly as possible.

  • Check in: Whether or not you have a camp booked, please inform the camp hosts of your site preferences. They can provide you with a site map to help you find where everything is located.
  • Initial Site Check – Once you arrive at your site, be sure to check for overhead obstructions and any other objects that could interfere with the parking lot or location of your RV. Make sure electrical connections are working before starting setup.
  • Parking – Plan ahead for how you plan to position your RV on the site and the best way to make it happen. Once you are happy with where you are, level the deck, unhitch and chock the trailer wheels, and put blocks under the landing gear. If you have a fifth wheel, pull the hitch lever. (This may sound ridiculous, but be sure to disconnect the connections from the truck to the RV before you leave! The voice embarrassed from the experience speaking!)
  • Site setup: Once you are sure the RV is stable, connect your electrical connection, water, sewer, etc. and turn on your LP gas.
  • Relax – start downloading the ‘basics’ – lawn chairs, grills, canopies, tables, or extras.
  • Have fun!

At the end of your motorhome camping vacation, the following tips and guidelines may be helpful in preparing for your departure:

  • Inside – Clean all your gear, put away all loose items like photos, knickknacks, dishes, etc. Close windows and vents, secure cabinets and drawers. Make sure all of your appliances are turned off, unplugged, and secured.
  • Equipment: Roll up and put away all awnings, rugs, chairs, grill, etc. Empty holding tanks, disconnect and store hoses. Unplug electrical connections, fill fresh water tank, drain and store water hose and filters. Make sure to turn off your propane!
  • Platform Removal: Remove and save all stabilizers, wheel chocks, and any other parking equipment. Hitch and check your hitch by pulling forward just enough to make sure it is tight Attach the breakaway switch wire, umbilical connection and check that all trailer and brake lights are working and raise the landing gear
  • Double Check – Do a thorough check of your campground to make sure everything has been resolved before closing your RV

RV Camping is fun and offers the opportunity to experience unforgettable panoramic views and attractions no matter where you go!
