Student group trip to Atlanta, Georgia equals southern hospitality

Known by its nickname “Hotlanta”, the city of Atlanta is a favorite destination for student group trips. Within this metropolitan area, student groups will find endless energy, big-city educational activities, and warm southern hospitality. Atlanta is packed with exciting attractions, world-class museums, unique historical sites, exclusive shopping, major league sports, exceptional fine arts, and delicious food. Often overshadowed by larger cities like New York City, Washington DC, or Chicago, Atlanta offers student groups an exciting and educational destination for groups of any size with many options for students including:

Georgia Aquarium – The largest aquarium in the world, the Georgia Aquarium offers students the best experience in aquatic life. The Georgia Aquarium captures the life of marine mammals, shellfish, and fish from Georgia’s Atlantic coast, as well as freshwater fish, mammals, reptiles, and more. which are indicative of the state of Georgia, Africa, South America and Asia. The Georgia Aquarium has many exhibits, a 4D theater, and excellent educational programs for groups of traveling students. Lesson plans and aquatic data sheets are also available for grades K-12.

World of Coke: The Coke Museum has many exhibits (many that are interactive) that cover the history of Coke. There are many works of art that show Coke’s impact on pop culture and the art world. Students can also try the best Coca-Cola soft drinks from around the world.

Six Flags Over Georgia – As Atlanta’s only official theme park, Six Flags Over Georgia has some of the most exciting attractions in the country. Featuring 11 fast-paced roller coasters including Batman, The Ride, and over 30 other rides, Six Flags Over Georgia will provide your group of students with some of the fastest, wildest, highest, and most heartbreaking rides and thrills they crave.

Stone Mountain: Being “the largest exposed piece of granite in the world,” Stone Mountain stretches nine miles underground and 1,686 feet. above the ground. Student groups can hike up the mountain or take an air ride to the top. The view from the top is amazing, especially on a clear day. Not only can you see the entire city of Atlanta, but also the North Georgia Mountains, which is a two-hour drive from Stone Mountain. The park has a fantastic laser show every night (mid-April through summer), as well as a train ride around the mountain, a playground, many gift shops, and more.

CNN Studios Tour – Many students are unaware that CNN originated and is still based in Atlanta. Students can tour a 50-foot globe where they can search for 25 years of CNN images through newsstands. Still hosting CNN’s 24-hour Headline News, students will experience a panoramic view of the live newsroom, control room, black box studio, and more. Student groups will also watch a demonstration on weather broadcasts.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History – While visiting the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, student groups can learn about the geological history of Georgia, starting with the foothills and ending in the coastal barrier islands. Students can also see a display of the oldest pottery found in North America, as well as an IMAX theater that shows educational films on a daily basis. Of special interest, the “Mesozoic Giants” exhibit presents an up-close view of prehistoric life in Patagonia, Argentina, where some of the world’s largest dinosaur skeletons have been found. Fernbank also frequently hosts special exhibits that are educational and geared toward student groups.

Zoo Atlanta – Zoo Atlanta has many exciting exhibits including the Ford African Rain Forest, the Flamingo Plaza, the Masai Mara (a replica of the East African Plains), and the Ketambe Exhibit, where rare Sumatran tigers are found. Additionally, Zoo Atlanta is best known for housing the giant pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang from China.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument: As a National Historic Site, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument offers student groups a comprehensive look at the origins of MLK. Tours include a visit to the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr., a tour of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. King, his father, and grandfather preached, a trip to the visitor center, and a tour of Martin Luther. King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

Centennial Olympic Park: Being the historical and educational information center for groups of traveling students, the park was originally built for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. During the visit, student groups will want to take a walking tour of the Olympic bombings commemorative quilts, the Quilt of Nations and the Fountain of the Rings.
