What to do if you lose your voice

Practicing your singing lessons can affect your throat and vocal cords. Singing difficult notes for long periods of time can lead to a sore throat, laryngitis, and other illnesses that can cause you to lose your voice. If you recently lost your voice, here are some tips to regain it and continue your vocal training:

Get a medical checkup

Loss of voice can be due to many things. Bacterial or viral infections and gastric reflux can cause loss of voice or hoarseness. So that you can effectively treat your condition, let a doctor examine you and find out the true cause of your loss of voice. Once you know why you lost your voice, take note of the correct treatment and medications prescribed by your doctor.

Drink lots of fluids

One key to treating voice loss and hoarseness is to keep the moisture dry. And the only way to do that is to drink plenty of fluids. Try increasing your daily water intake to help soothe your sore throat. However, avoid drinking alcoholic beverages and coffee because they can deprive your throat of much-needed moisture.

Avoid smoking

Smoking is never good for your health, so it is best avoided while trying to recover from the loss of your voice. If you don’t smoke, limit your exposure to secondhand smoke because tobacco fumes can irritate your already swollen throat and make things worse.

Try some proven home remedies

Aside from prescription drugs, there are many natural remedies that you can prepare using ingredients that you can find in your kitchen. To start, mix a cup of warm water with half a teaspoon of salt and use it as a gargle. Gargle with this mixture several times a day to speed up the healing process. However, be sure not to use too much salt, as this can dry out your membranes and make laryngitis symptoms worse. Another effective home remedy is to drink some ginger tea. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, so make a batch of warm ginger tea if you want to get back to your singing lessons ASAP. You can add honey to your cup of ginger tea, as honey is also known for its antibacterial properties.

Inhaling steam can also do wonders for a tired throat. Boil some water and put it in a bowl or cup. Lean over the mug and wrap the hood of your sweatshirt or a towel around your face. Inhale the steam slowly and let it soothe your sore throat. To avoid burns, inhale the vapor from a safe distance.

Get enough rest

Losing your voice can be a hassle, especially if your vocal training requires daily singing exercises. However, it will not help at all if you force yourself to sing even if your voice does not come out due to a sore throat or laryngitis. The best thing to do is get plenty of rest while taking your prescription drugs and trying some of the home remedies mentioned above. Speak quietly when trying to recover from the loss of voice and avoid yelling or talking unnecessarily. By allowing your throat to get plenty of rest, you will be able to get back to your singing lessons as soon as possible.
