Beach volleyball training: why switch sides mid-game?

This article is to tell you about some beach volleyball tips, mainly why players change sides in the middle of the game. Have you ever watched beach volleyball on TV and wondered why the teams switched sides in the middle of the game?

Beach volleyball is a completely different game than indoor 6v6 volleyball. One obvious difference is the fact that it is played outdoors in the elements. So you have many other factors to consider like wind and sun. These are the top 2 reasons why teams switch sides in multiples of 7 in the middle of games. One side will always have an advantage over the other because the sun will be in one team’s eyes or the wind will be in one side more than the other. So, to eliminate these advantages or disadvantages, the teams change sides when the sum of the points of both teams add up to 7 or multiples of seven.

For example, when the score is 8 to 6, the teams will switch sides. Or if the score is 14 to 14 or even 14 to 0, they will switch sides to keep things fair.

That is not the only difference between indoor and outdoor volleyball, the whole game is different in terms of rules. For example, in beach volleyball you cannot open the tip of the hand, place the serve, place the side over the net, or have sets that look sloppy. Everything must be clean and the device must not rotate. That’s why they let you hold the ball a little longer in sand volleyball because they want it to come out clean.
