The online world is full of news that Comcast, America’s second-largest Internet service provider, was hacked when the service was stopped.

Many people, when trying to log into Comcast, found a blank white screen with bold pink lettering that read:

Was Comcast just a big target for a hack or was it a BitTorrent revenge attack as some people have speculated?

It is well known that Comcast has upset a large portion of its customer base by actually banning BitTorrent traffic and restricting the use of popular Peer-2-Peer networks and that this could be a form of revenge on the part of the hackers.

There is much speculation about who the culprits are, as the prank is said to have been perpetrated by two young hackers eager to make a name for themselves. Rumors are also circulating that the group responsible for the attack previously targeted Justin Timberlake and Hilary Duff, although this may be just speculation.

There was a concern that hackers might have accessed customers ’email accounts, but this does not appear to have happened, and it appears that the hackers’ motivations were not for monetary gain, but rather as a kind revenge tactic.

This highlights the apparent ease with which hackers and virus senders can disrupt services. Think about it: if America’s second-largest ISP is at risk, what does that mean for you and me?
