Diving is one of the most exciting and impressive sports that a person can enjoy. Where else can you dive below the ocean’s surface and explore the myriad plants and sea creatures that call the ocean home? Some might say that there are amusement parks and aquariums that provide a glimpse of what life is like in the ocean and lakes. If you want a true underwater experience, there’s nothing like scuba diving.
Before the Dive
In addition to getting your scuba certification from a trained scuba instructor, anyone looking to explore the underwater world should purchase essential scuba accessories. The following are essential items to purchase before beginning your diving adventures.
Wetsuit – Wetsuits help keep your body warm in hot and cold water.
Regardless of the water temperature, the human body cools much faster in water than in air, so a wetsuit is essential.
Swim Fins: Swim fins, or scuba fins, help with speed and efficient movement in the water.
Mask and snorkel: A mask and snorkel allow for clear vision when underwater. Masks help equalize sinus and ear pressure. The snorkel provides the tube needed to inhale and exhale underwater without swallowing water.
Regulator – The regulator is an essential piece of equipment for breathing underwater. The device connects to the tank, allowing divers to inhale oxygen.

Dive Computer – These devices alert divers to their depth, how long they can safely stay underwater. Some computers work in conjunction with other devices
Pressure Gauge – A submersible pressure gauge, or SPG, shows the amount of air/oxygen left in a diver’s tank.
Buoyancy Compensator: A buoyancy compensator, BC, serves multiple purposes. They support the weight of the oxygen tank while above the water. Through inflation of the BC’s internal bladder, or release of air, divers can sink deeper into the water or rise to the surface of the water faster.
With so much gear to carry, a diver would benefit from a large duffel bag. Other scuba accessories that divers may find beneficial include underwater lights, underwater cameras, dive knives, compasses, logbooks, and a plethora of other available accessories. Another beneficial accessory is a boat coat or dive parka, both of which can help the diver stay warm after returning to dry land after extended time in the water.
