Garage Floor Paint for a New Look

If you are looking for painting options for your residential garage, there are many types of garage floor paint. The success of applying paint to a concrete floor depends on the preparation process applied. Clean surfaces accept paint more easily and the seal will be durable. The most common types of garage floor paints are: epoxy, polyurethane, or latex.

Epoxy is the most recommended garage floor paint because cement and epoxy bond together very effectively. The finish will be strong and will withstand spills, car and bicycle tires, and foot traffic for years to come. The importance of a clean floor before epoxy-based floor paint cannot be overstated. Dust and debris will cause the paint to bubble and crack, preventing an effective seal.

Polyurethane is an alternative and has a tough finish so stains and abrasions are less likely to permanently mar the surface. Application of this type of paint will result in a high gloss finish, but the preparation must include a primer coat to create the bond between the cement and the final polyurethane garage floor paint. The extra step may change your mind about this option.

The least expensive option for painting your floor is latex-based paint. The drawback of this type of paint is the long drying period of three days. In some climates it will be difficult to schedule three consecutive days without moisture. During the drying period, cars must be parked outside the garage and people will have to find another way to the backyard. The variety of colors in a latex paint far outweighs the other two options.
