Cystic acne or what is horribly called acne vulgaris is the worst type of pimple breakout. They are more than a small lump on the skin. These breakouts are large, deep blemishes that are often accompanied by soft, painful cysts or bumps just inside the skin. They are commonly caused by an overproduction of oil from the sebaceous glands, dead skin cells along the follicles, and the presence of Propionibacteria acnes, the hated bacteria that cause acne.

Strawberries are not only delicious snacks, but also effective remedies for cystic acne. Blend five fresh strawberries together with the white part of a raw egg for 8 to 10 seconds. You can also mix in half a cup of strawberries, a tablespoon of heavy cream, and a tablespoon of rice flour. Both mixtures and pastes can be applied to the affected areas. Leave them for about 30 minutes before washing them off. Strawberry leaves can also be used. Soak a handful of leaves in hot water for about five minutes. Wash the leaves after soaking and then place them on the acne. Strawberries have an alkaline content that reduces the size of cysts.

Apricots have anti-inflammatory properties that make them effective natural remedies for cystic acne. Gather the juice from the fresh apricots, soak a cotton ball, and rub some of the juice on the affected areas. Leave it on for several hours before rinsing it off lightly. The cold compress will help decrease swelling. Use some ice wrapped in a towel or gauze on the cysts. You can also apply a cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar to the cystic areas. Leave the cotton ball on the acne for 15 minutes before washing it lightly.

Fast-acting drugs for cystic acne

As with other forms of acne breakouts, benzoyl peroxide is also the most recommended topical cream against pimples. In fact, it is even better than oral antibiotics because bacteria do not develop a resistance to its effects unlike some antibiotics. These antibiotics can be topical or oral, depending on your preferences and those of your dermatologist. The most common antibiotics for cystic acne are erythromycin, clindamycin, and tetracyclines. Women are given oral contraceptives as a remedy for severe acne breakouts. The reason behind this is that hormones are believed to be one of the main causes of pimples. Other medications that are administered are oral and topical retinoids, anti-inflammatories and antiseptics.

In severe cases, some medical procedures are necessary. Dermabrasion, phototherapy, and surgical puncture are the common procedures performed on cystic acne. Surgical puncture is done by making an incision and then draining pus and other infected substances from the area.
