Papillon Puppies – Butterfly Eared Teacups

Papillon puppies and adult dogs actually have extremely large ears that spread out like the wings of a butterfly. This is how we get the Papillon name for this breed, the word Papillon means butterfly in French.

These dogs are what we call a teacup breed, which means they are among the smallest dogs in the world, much smaller than a standard dog, and weighing between 5 and 10 pounds. Smaller breeds do exist, but these dogs would certainly classify as teacups for the most part. The Chihuahua breed produces dogs that tend to be slightly smaller than the Papillon, with an average weight of around 2 to 6 pounds.

Teacup dogs tend to have brittle bones and need a lot of grooming, much more so than a standard-size dog. With such a small size it is much easier for these dogs to be injured. So please, if you own or are going to see Papillon puppies, be prepared to provide a lot of protection for your dog, these particular dogs need it. Some dogs are more protective (Great Danes, Bullmastiffs) and some dogs need a little more protection.

Licensed breeders are what you are looking for if you are looking for a new puppy. You’ll find that unlicensed breeders and puppy farm owners definitely exist, so do yourself a huge favor and don’t take your puppy purchase lightly. Do your background checks and you’ll be fine. A great way to find the perfect puppy is to simply network with other dog owners, if they have an even better Papillon.

The Papillon breed is native to Spain and is sometimes referred to as the Continental Toy Spaniel, since it belongs to the Spaniel family.

These small dogs have a tendency to hypoglycemia, so it is important to feed them several times a day, being 2 to 4 times the amount of food recommended in general. Like all dogs, the Papillon loves fat in their diet, most dogs tend to have a high-fat diet, and these are no exception. Wet dog food is a must and mixing a little animal fat with your dog food several times a week will really help these dogs shine.

Ranging in color from white to brown to red to fawn and black, these pups will have a unique color with multiple spots most of the time. They are very intelligent and loyal dogs, but don’t expect them to automatically snuggle into your lap just because they are small dogs, they are not considered to be what we call “lap dogs.”

Remember our tips on how to find good breeders, and when looking at Papillon puppies, try to find a puppy whose personality seems to really fit yours. Take a few minutes to look at the garbage and it will be pretty clear which one it is for you.
