Powder Coating Secrets You Should Know

Powder coating can be a substitute for paint and is ideal for providing durable finishes to various items. Items are coated with thermosetting powder and baked in the powder coating oven at approximately 350°F to 400°F, at which time the powder melts, thus producing a uniform coating. The chemical process that takes place during heating is called crosslinking and provides durability to the article being coated. To successfully apply this coating you must have the necessary skill and this piece will do that justice.

The surface of the material to be coated must be adequately prepared for the process. Parts must be disassembled down to the most basic level and any parts that will not hold up to heat, such as plastic, must be removed. Parts must be properly cleaned to remove traces of grease, oil, dirt, rust, etc. You can sandblast the parts to clean them as best you can.

A clean sheet, plastic sheeting or tarp should be placed to cover the area where the powder coating will be applied. You can take the cover and throw it away at the end of the process. A vacuum cleaner should not be used for cleaning so that dust does not settle elsewhere. Applying the powder into deep corners and remote areas can be difficult, but repositioning the item to allow gravity to assist the coating process will allow you to spray in remote areas. It is also important to use the proper tips for the area and item you are coating.

You should not bake your powder coated item in an oven that is used to cook food because toxic fumes may be released during the process. There are ovens specifically designed for this type of process and are generally referred to as powder coating ovens. They are not that expensive and you can get them in stores in your area or even online. The item should not be baked longer than the time specified by the manufacturer.

Your oven should be tested for temperature accuracy and it is important to use the exact temperature that the manufacturer states on the powdered product. If you don’t use the correct temperature, your item may come out of the oven with a matte finish instead of a smooth glossy finish. If the temperature is too low, your coating will not solidify properly.
