Shopping for Gloucester Old Spot

The Old Spot is sometimes known as the Orchard Pig. Traditionally kept in orchards, they have black spots that are anecdotally attributed to falling apples bruising the pig. The Gloucester Old Spot is one of the best known British pigs and is highly sought after.

In the 1960s Old Spot numbers began to decline rapidly so much so that they were registered with the Rare Breeds Trust. They are now listed as having a “vulnerable” status from that point forward and instead became a “minority” race.

With numbers declining, the breed was registered some forty years ago with the Rare Breeds Trust because the number of breeding sows was found to be extremely low. Since that intervention, the breed has gone from “vulnerable” status to “minority”.

Gloucester Old Spot pigs are particularly hardy and thrive outdoors even in the coldest winters, protected by their layer of backfat. Their floppy ears cover their faces and their docile manners make them more endearing. They are also very good mothers.

Pigs are very good housekeepers and make sure that the dirt outside their pen is kept very clean. They love to interact with those who care for them and love nothing more than a scratch on the back or a good pat.

Wallowing in a wallow in hot weather provides them with a layer of mud that protects them from the sun. Contrary to popular belief, pigs can get sunburned.

Rare breed pigs should be allowed to grow slowly. All used cuts of them are best cooked slowly and basted in the fat for amazing flavor. Most of the quality pork available is from this breed.

As with other food products such as Parma ham and Stilton cheese, the Old Spot has taken on a status of its own. When sold with TSG labeling, you can be sure it comes from purebred registered pigs.
