Malibu History

The word Malibu is derived from a Chumash word meaning “the waves roll loud.” In the 1500s, Spanish settlers fell in love with the majestic beauty of Malibu’s beaches and frequented it during their California mission trips. In 1891, Frederick Hastings Rindge took possession of 13,000 acres of Malibu, which he and his wife guarded closely. His need for privacy helped maintain the natural state of the city, while much of the rest of the state was in a frenzy of development and construction. In 1929, the famous Pacific Coast Highway was built, and Malibu officially became the hallmark of glamorous California life.

Malibu Colony

Along Malibu Road, just west of PCH, you’ll find Malibu Colony, one of the first beachfront communities in the city to be uninhabited. When the Rindge family finally sold part of their massive ranch in the late 1920s, Hollywood movie stars were among the first buyers. Today, many celebrities still call the Colony home, as it is a private and exclusive community of multi-million dollar mansions. The views from Malibu Colony are some of the most impressive in California, spanning endless stretches of the Pacific coastline, along with Malibu Bluffs. Malibu Colony homes continue to be some of the most sought after real estate in Malibu.

The Malibu Pier

At the heart of California’s surf scene, you’ll find the Malibu Pier and adjacent Surfrider Beach. The pier itself has been recently renovated, bringing a nostalgic look back to its restaurants and quaint shops. Planned expansions also include a Surfrider museum and a Shake Stand. The Malibu Pier is also the perfect launching point for many of the coastal city’s scenic cruise tours, as well as world-class deep-sea fishing. But perhaps one of the pier’s biggest draws is the beach itself. Warm white sand straddles the historic pier, while surfers from around the world come to surf Surfrider’s 3-point break, offering rides of 300 yards or more.
