The United States of Planet Earth

Is it really possible to create a world government that would be similar to the United States of America, only that it would involve all the nations on all the continents? If you recall, the League of Nations failed, and the United Nations is having a rather difficult time trying to unite the world in a common cause of humanity. There are too many different cultures, religions and ways of thinking. There are also too many government structures.

There is communism, capitalism, socialism and even anarchy. We have democracies, republics and even dictatorships. On the religious front we have Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and that’s only for the big ones, as there are thousands of organized religions in the world, and different divisions and sects of each. So many that it is almost impossible to keep track of them.

Even so, is the dream of a United States of Planet Earth, or of a United Countries of Planet Earth, possible? It’s an interesting long-term goal for humanity and human civilizations, but is it achievable? Not long ago, I was discussing this with an acquaintance of mine and we got into one of my theories that we could eventually have a federation of nations that would essentially function as a franchise company. Where each government had a similar structure, had a somewhat similar set of rules, and yet had regional variations to account for culture and religion, would that be possible?

It could be, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen in the next five decades, there’s too much diversity, too much anger, too much animosity and too many countries willing to serve their own interests without taking into account the Western-style Win-Win where we work together in the free trade. However, I would tell you that free trade between the nations involved in trade is the quickest path to peace.
