Coton De Tulear – Have you heard of this breed of dog?
I may be a bit biased, but I don’t understand why the Coton de Tulear dog breed is not more popular. If you were to make a list of all the qualities that make up the perfect dog, the Coton de Tulear would be at the top of the list.
Yes, of course I have a Coton Dog. I met Luc by chance and it was love at first sight. He was a beautiful snow-white furry bundle of love and energy, so what if I can’t pronounce or spell the breed? (pronounced Co tawn day too lee are).
However, there are a few things to consider before adopting one of these beautiful dogs. One is that an investment of time and money is required for personal hygiene. Cottons are long-haired and require frequent brushing or may become tangled.
I keep Luc in a puppy cut so his coat is very easy to care for. It costs me about $ 55 a month at the salon with brushing once or twice a week between visits. The good news is that even with their long hair, they don’t shed much. That is a huge advantage, especially if you suffer from allergies.
The second thing to consider is that they can be quite expensive and usually cannot be found at the local shelter. The average price of a Coton de Tulear ranges from $ 1,200 to $ 3,500. You can check the Coton Rescue Organization (cotonrescue.us) to see if there are any Cotons in need of a home.
The third thing to keep in mind is that when you tell someone you have a Coton de Tulear, they stare at you blankly because they have never heard of the breed.
I’m surprised these dogs aren’t more popular in the US because:
The Coton de Tulear has a soft, cotton-like coat that sheds very little (ideal for allergy sufferers).
They’re energetic, but will fit into any lifestyle, whether you’re a TV addict or an avid runner.
They are kind and gentle. They love children AND other animals.
They are known to be a healthy breed so there aren’t too many trips to the vet.
Cotons are extremely intelligent, making it easy to train them and teach them good manners.
They are ideal for smaller homes or apartments, weighing 8-15 pounds on average.
This easy-going breed makes him a great companion dog for everyone, young and old.
They are very cute and give great hugs.
Coton Dogs are extremely loyal to their owners and make excellent watchdogs (don’t worry, they aren’t yappy).
So if you are looking for a wonderful fluffy little dog that will be a loyal and loving addition to your family, consider a Coton de Tulear. It can be difficult to spell and pronounce, but that’s really a very low price to pay. Just be sure to go to a reputable breeder and stay away from puppy mills.
