Overcoming the winter blues in Aruba

As snow falls across the US, the Caribbean island of Aruba enjoys endless summer. With an average annual temperature of 82°F (28°C), visitors are guaranteed mild weather regardless of the season. In fact, no month has an average high temperature below 85°F (29°C) or above 89°F (32°C). Low temperatures typically range from 76°F (24°C) to 80°F (27°C), allowing visitors to enjoy nightlife year-round. However, with so many of us suffering the winter blues at home, the December through April travel season is the best time to take advantage of Aruba’s incredible weather. Although Aruba is located near the equator, a constant trade wind from the east cools the island and prevents storms from blowing over the island. As a result, Aruba averages just 18 inches of precipitation per year, with most of the rain falling between October and January. This trade wind also creates impeccable conditions on the East Coast for sports like windsurfing. On the other hand, the calm waters of the western coast are ideal for diving and snorkeling. Even the sun rises and sets at almost the same time every day, allowing visitors to enjoy a majestic Caribbean site at any time of the year. Perhaps best of all, the island is never threatened by tropical storms.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Aruba during January and February is the non-stop celebration of Carnival. Beginning with the New Year, Carnival is an ongoing festival highlighted by parades, live music, and unique cultural performances. The Carnival celebration reaches its peak with the Grand Parade, now in its 53rd year, on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. If you were wondering how important Carnival is in Aruba, take note that the island has declared next Monday a national day of rest!

These winter months are also a great time to explore Aruba’s Arikok National Park, a one-of-a-kind nature reserve that covers nearly 20% of the island. With miles of hiking trails and numerous exotic species you won’t see anywhere else, Arikok National Park is an essential stop on your Aruba vacation, no matter when you visit.

Although it may seem strange to lie on the beach in mid-February, that is exactly what makes Aruba so attractive. Aruba’s beaches are regularly among the cleanest, widest, and most beautiful in the Caribbean. On the southwestern coast of the island, travelers will find one beach after another, each with its own unique atmosphere and various activities. Almost all the beaches are public and many offer equipment for water sports, swimming and diving.

In addition to excellent shopping opportunities, Aruba’s capital, Oranjestad, boasts a number of unique museums and historical sites. Oranjestad is, in fact, a bustling colonial capital during the high season, with many tours and activities available. Outside of the capital, you’ll find plenty of historic architecture and remnants of Aruba’s colonial past.

As Aruba’s peak season corresponds to the winter months in the United States, activities can be more difficult to find in the summer. However, the low tourist season, from April to the beginning of the winter holiday season, can be a good time for families and budget-conscious travelers to visit Aruba, as many discounts are available. Be aware, however, that some tour operators may have limited or no service during parts of the off-season, while shops and restaurants generally close earlier. Aruba’s summer months are also enjoyed by more European and South American visitors, although Americans remain the most represented tourist group.

A winter getaway to Aruba can be a dream come true for snowbound Americans. Every season in Aruba will bring you great weather and lots of fun.
