Table lamps and history

The earliest history of table lamps dates back to approximately 70,000 BC. The person who needed a lamp for more illumination would take a hollow shell or rock and fill it with moss or other materials that were soaked in animal fat. Once the rock or shell was full of moss, they were set on fire or burned.

It was long after the use of rocks and shells that people began to make things to hold the materials to make light. Handmade pottery, animal bones, and alabaster were used. Wicks were then added at a later time so that there was more control over the burning rate.

Around the 7th century BC. C., the Greeks made terracotta lights and lamps. The word lamp is actually derived from the Greek language. Lamp as is what the Greeks call light which means torch.

During the 18th century the center burner was invented. Today we call the central burner the oil lamp. The fuel source was encased in metal and there was a metal tube to control the amount of fuel and the brightness of the light.

The first electric lamp was invented by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1801. The carbon arc lamp worked by connecting two carbon rods to an electrical source. By having the rods at a certain distance, the electricity would form an arc and generate light.

Sir Joseph Swann and Thomas Edison invented the first true electric table lamps. It was the lamp invented by Thomas Edison that became the first commercially sold lamp in the world in the year 1879. Table lamps have come a long way since then.

Table lamps can be found all over the world. These lamps come in a wide range of colors and sizes. There are handmade lamps and designer lamps that can cost thousands of dollars. Today’s table lamps can be powered by all kinds of different light bulbs.

Table lamps can be purchased anywhere lighting and fixtures are sold. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on just a table lamp, it’s best to go to a department store or home improvement store.

Newer LED and task lights are also available on the market. Although they are still considered table lamps, they were developed for a certain task. You will see many of these lamps on desks. The only lamp that does not fall under the heading of table lamp is the floor lamp. A floor lamp is where the base of the lamp sits on the ground.

Floor lamps are a great alternative to table lamps where space becomes an issue. Both types of lighting will add style and decoration to your room. There are so many variations of lamps available that there is a perfect lamp for every taste.
