Visiting Greenwich Village New York
Greenwich Village, New York City is a place of great repute and one of the most important places in the city where both residents and visitors come to simply spend the day or night. Although it has a reputation for being an avant-garde place, in recent years it has lost some of its bohemian air.
Today, it’s mostly upper-middle class and there are some pretty quirky apartments available there too. Many tourists visit this part of Manhattan and like what they see. If you want to go to this particular area of Manhattan, you might be interested to know that this is where the Beat Generation decided to set up camp. Among the famous residents who made Greenwich Village, New York, their home, is the singer Bob Dylan.
The town is easy to find, but the boundaries of the area have changed significantly over the years. In fact, the Lower East Side and Greenwich Village New York City are not part of the same area, although they do exist in the same general area of Manhattan. It’s not exactly the Greenwich Village of yesteryear with its easy beatnik vibe, but it’s still interesting to visit. The town is located west of Broadway in Manhattan between 14th Street and Houston Street.
The area primarily caters to the adult crowd and many of the bars and clubs in this neighborhood range from cheap to quite expensive. However, you can find very good vegetarian food at a fairly reasonable price. Actually, you can find just about any food you want from any of the street vendors that are very common in New York City.
Although Greenwich Village, New York City isn’t generally for kids, it can take them to places that don’t intersect with the more grown-up parts of the neighborhood. A good place to go with children is Washington Square Park. If you need some alone time with your partner, you can also go there for a romantic getaway.
The area has an interesting history. Before European and American settlers came along, the town was a large tobacco field tended by Native Americans. After Dutch settlers arrived, it was cleared of harvest and renamed Nordwyck.
After the English settlers showed up, they forced the Dutch settlers to leave and renamed the area Grin’wich. At the time, Grin’Wich as a neighborhood was not actually part of New York City. When yellow fever spread and wiped out a large population in lower Manhattan, many people moved to Grin’Wich because it had open spaces and clean air.
The history isn’t particularly significant when one thinks of what the town stood for in the 1950s and 1970s, but its 20th-century bohemian culture took root there as did other important parts of American history like the anti-Vietnam War movement. . During this time, Greenwich Village, New York City was home to a unique culture and alternative lifestyles. Residents of the area were thought by many to be so-called beatniks or hippies and often avoided their residents. This further cemented Greenwich Village’s avant-garde reputation and its artsy scene.
Many writers, musicians, poets and artists moved to the area for its atmosphere and in search of their own fame. Businesses there were usually coffee shops and thrift stores, but they began to cater specifically to arts people and became accessible to that particular type of customer.
These days, the neighborhood has undergone quite a few changes compared to its bohemian days. Of course, Greenwich Village, New York City, is still a very interesting place to visit, but the borders are closer and the artistic feel and atmosphere is practically absent. However, you can find certain areas that still represent that. One of the reasons things have changed is that house prices have risen dramatically. In the sixties, housing here was very affordable. Today, however, you could pay $2,000 a month or more for a one-bedroom apartment.
Although it used to be that Spring Street was the Village’s boundary, it is now West 4th Street. West 4th Street still has the flavor and feel of the original art scene in small areas. This is where you can still find some of the original art scene. This was a major epicenter of the homosexual movement some twenty years ago. The area is a mix of straight and gay nightclubs and boutiques offering alternative clothing popular with young people. The area is also sometimes called New York City’s red light district.
West 4th Street also has the famous street courts, training ground for many of the best street basketball players. The NBA and And 1 Corporation used this place as a location to make street basketball movies. The courts are across the street from the West 4th Street subway stop and it’s a popular place to stop and just watch the skill of the athletes, especially during the summer months.
