What you don’t know about Dunkers

Spud Webb at a height of only 5’7 won the 1986 NBA Slam Dunk contest. Nate Robinson won the 2009 Slam Dunk contest with a height of only 5’8. Typically, many of the contestants in the dunk contest are over 6 feet tall. But what’s different about dunkers under 6 feet? They are an inspiration to other basketball players whose goal or dream is to be able to shoot a basketball. So, what is the key to being able to make a mate? It’s pretty simple, they know what workouts to use and what motivation will keep them going to reach their goal.

Any athlete or coach who has any knowledge or experience in the field of dunking knows that it takes a lot of determination and focus to reach the height of being able to dunk. Athletes or coaches who are experts in this field, use these exercise plans. They are weight training and plyometrics. With weight training, you’ll eventually build a solid foundation of strength and that’s the key to the next step involving jumping jacks or plyometrics. You see, doing exercises like squats and deadlifts requires proper biomechanics and with proper biomechanics you will get the most benefit from the workouts you do. Strength exercises like squats and deadlifts provide testing force, and the more force you can generate, the better.

You see, when your body has a solid foundation of strength and power, then that’s when you’re ready to take your body to the next level, which is plyometrics and becoming more explosive. What plyometrics does is make your legs able to generate more force in a quick, short period of time, which is, in the same sense, the same as running or jumping. This is the same principle that applies if someone were to spike, a player will need to be able to generate strong force or explosiveness in a quick period of time. Plyometrics will make your legs spring like a spring, but there are some issues to be aware of with plyometrics as they are very stressful on the knee joints. With this, overtime can lead to joint problems and stress fractures in the legs and possibly arthritis. This is what people like Spud Webb and Nate Robinson, as well as many other athletes who want to dunk, have to endure. But with careful planning and training routines, they must train with weights properly and know that plyometrics is the main ingredient that will lead someone to be able to jump higher and achieve their goal.
