7 questions to ask your moving service before everything gets underway

Hire a moving service? It’s not that hard, at least not as hard as all that damn packing you’ll have to do. To keep things simple during this busy time, here are 7 key questions to ask them before you sign anything.

How much will this cost me?

While no one in their right mind would forget to ask a moving service how much it costs, you have to go a little further. When you get a quote, find out exactly what is included and what it is based on. They will usually base the price on the distance you are going to travel and the weight of your things. Make sure this estimate includes all fees that could possibly be added there. You don’t want any surprises when the bill is handed over to you.

Is there a way we can make it cheaper?

This question usually follows the last one. And it’s worth asking, because there are often ways to do it cheaper, sometimes A LOT cheaper. A moving service will usually have some deals and discounts, and will usually work with you on the price if you can be a bit flexible. For example, lightening the load will generally lower the price, so if you can take a trip or two in your car, that might help. They also have free time when looking for work. If you can plan your schedule, you may be able to save some money.

Can I get that in writing?

“That” means the estimate. Make sure that what the removal service tells you, they write it down and give it to you. Keeping this cataloged in your own records will benefit you in case something goes wrong.

Is it fully licensed and insured?

This is a really important question. Make sure they have responsibility for their own workers; if they don’t, YOU do. That means if someone gets hurt on the job, guess who pays?

What is your registration number?

Every moving company in the US must be registered with the US Department of Transportation and each company is given an identification number. Save this for reference in case you need it. It may be printed on the bills and forms you fill out.

What is our time frame here?

Moving companies are busy people and they don’t like things to go off schedule. Find out exactly when they will come for your things and make sure you are ready. They will usually contact you to confirm a few weeks in advance to make sure everything is in order. Put all of these important dates on your calendar and start packing ASAP. Moving companies don’t like things to be delayed.

Do I have to be there?

Usually, they will ask you to be physically present when they start the move. You should ask them to make sure, and also ask them if you need to be there during the move. For insurance and liability reasons, you may be required to be present during all loading and unloading operations. Get informed and plan around it.

Once you’ve asked your movers these questions, you’re good to go. Now all you have to do is pack up all your things, make arrangements to move and change your address, save a lot of money to cover all the moving expenses, and then unpack and organize everything in your new home. Good luck!
